ELEPHANT

Asian elephant or Elephas maximas in scientific name.
      Elephants are the largest terrestrial mammals and they has been listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and listed on CITES in Appendix I
          In Thailand, Wild elephants are classified as protected animals in the Wild Animal Reservation and Protection Act or WARPA of 1992.


The basic knowledge for research and conservation

  • The basic research question mostly about numbers of population and their demography
  • The basic knowledge also related to the individual behavior and social behavior of the elephant and important threats for elephants nowadays is a human elephant conflict.
  • The answer of the question, we need to know information about Individual identification, sex and age classification, we can used it for management and conservation.

" I Interested to study Individual identified of wild elephant and was conducted by the elephant photos from case study of Salak Phra Wildlife Sanctuary, Kanchanaburi "


The research objectives 



 List traits and states of elephant characteristics as guideline for individual   identification, sex and age classification.


Methodology

  • The study area is Salak Phra Wildlife Sanctuary Salak phra was Thailand's first wildlife sanctuary located in Kanchanaburi province. There have the problems about  human elephant conflict. In this area, the officer are interested in wild elephants and they have chance to see and take the photos wild elephants.
  • For developing guideline to individual identification, sex classification of the wild Asian elephant. 
    • By the research of Goswami and the team in 2011 and Vidya and the team in 2014. 
    • The two study aimed to the individual identification for the wild elephants. By use study site at Nagarahole National Park and Bandipur Tiger Reserve in southern India as the same.
  • For developing the guideline to age classification. Be used the book of The Asian elephant: ecology and management of sukumar  in 1992
  • Compile the necessary traits to identification /develop it to be the particular guideline for my study and produce my own guideline for this study

Results

      Guideline for Individual Identification, Sex and Age classification consist of  Checklist for Individual Identification, Glossary and Illustration of characters
